Hardware Sources
Local electronics stores such as
Best Buy and
Circuit City
seem now to have a limited offering of Palm and Pocket PC handhelds;
their on-line offerings are usually better. Office super
stores seem to have a much better selection. In our area,
Staples
has the best selection, followed by
Office Max
and then
Office
Depot. Smart phones, such as the
Treo 650,
can be purchased from local
Sprint
and
Cingular
dealers.
The best possible deals are usually found on the web.
The official Palm site,
www.PalmOne.com,
is the best place to start for Palms. For the Pocket PC,
the market leader is Hewlett Packard. HP's official store
site, www.shopping.hp.com,
shows the latest HP handheld offerings. For the best bargains,
however, we like two sites in particular:
www.buy.com
and www.overstock.com.
We've found refurbished, open box, and blemished Palms and Pocket
PCs at bargain basement prices at overstock.com. The units
come with the usual manufacturer's warranty; we've had no failures
to date. Before making a purchase of a handheld,
be sure to check with your chosen software vendor for any special
requirements. In our case, Pocket eSchool needs
a Palm which has an Secure Digital (SD) card slot.
Pocket eSchool runs on any Pocket PC. For memory
cards, buy.com's prices and selection is hard to beat; we've
purchased 128 mb SD cards for less than $18 each.
